Holiday Dinner Fundraiser with David L. Thomas

On November the 24th we had our annual Holiday Dinner and Fundraiser. We were honoured to have David L. Thomas, a lawyer and mediator in British Columbia. From 2014-2021, he served as the Chairperson of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal in Ottawa.

David spoke on the perils of Bill C63, The Online Harms Act. As David described, this act is being sold as protection against Child Pornography, but is in fact a deliberate attack to freedom of speech.

The most egregious inclusions into this act is that anyone can file a hate speech complaint and do so anonymously while inflicting all the associated social and legal cost onto the accused. And, this can be done without the Act containing a clear definition of hate speech.

Luke Reed the EDA’s financial Agent spoke briefly on the importance of donating to the local Burnaby North - Seymour EDA. As Luke highlighted, a donation to the National Conservative Party of Canada helps persuade the voting public. A donation to the local EDA is used for the most critical task to Get out the Vote. This includes the visible elements of advertising and Lawn Signs, but also the hard work of door to door canvassing and phone calling to identify voters and making sure the vote.
